Earth Day; Renewable revolution that could help with the cost of living

The UK is moving forward and committed to reaching net zero by 2050.

This year marks the 55th Earth Day — a global moment to reflect, reset, and take action.

Earth Day 2025's theme, Our Power, Our Planet, is a call for everyone to power up the transition to renewable energy.

At COP28 in December 2023, more than 110 countries committed to tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030 as part of the Global Renewables and Energy Efficiency Pledge. This will help meet global net zero goals while reducing the use of fossil fuels for energy, which is exacerbating the impacts of climate change.

Yet with climate change seemingly being written out of US history books, the need for action has never been greater.

Luckily, the picture is rather different in the UK.

In 2024 the UK eliminated coal-fired power generation, marking the end of coal as a source of electricity.

And the UK government has set ambitious goals to increase renewable energy capacity, with a 2030 target to generate 95 percent of electricity from low-carbon sources such as wind, solar and nuclear.

Additionally, the UK is committed to reaching net zero by 2050, with an interim reduction in emissions by 2030 of 68 per cent.

But while progress remains slow, with a snail’s pace roll-out of home energy efficiency schemes such as home solar and heat pumps, the UK is still moving forward – and so can you.

Here’s some answers to a list of questions we often hear, with actions  you can take right now to make a difference – and cut your bills.

Should I switch to a green energy tariff?

Not all energy tariffs labelled ‘green’ actually are, so make sure to seek out  providers offering 100% renewable electricity. Options include Good Energy, Ecotricity,  Octopus Energy and Ovo.

Can I upgrade my heating controls?

Smart thermostats keep your home warm without overheating your rooms and wasting energy. By using them effectively, you could save up to £110 a year on your heating bills, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

What about loft insulation?

Poor insulation = wasted energy, and wasted money. Loft, wall, floor and shed insulation can dramatically improve efficiency and comfort. You might be eligible for a government grant via the Great Britain Insulation Scheme or even buying the insulation yourself can be a quick fix if you can’t afford the professionals. Check out your local DIY store like Wickes - Just make sure you’re doing it correctly.

Should I invest in LED light bulbs?

LED light bulbs use 75 percent less energy than traditional bulbs — and can last up to 25 times longer.

Does turning off the wall sockets save energy and money?

If a plug socket  is still on with a device on standby then the chances are it’s still using energy and costing you money. Switching off at source will ensure you’re not wasting energy.

Top Tip: TVs and other devices might need to remain on standby to save specific settings, so check your instruction manual first.

How else can I reduce my electricity bill and help the planet?

  • Buy low energy appliances
  • Run appliances during off-peak hours and on eco-mode
  • Only boil what you need
  • Always turn off standby mode

Go further on Earth Day!

If you're ready to go further, the UK government offers grants and green loans to support energy upgrades. Platforms like the Energy Saving Trust are great starting points for more information.

Or for more comprehensive retrofit options, companies like Propflo* provide a one-stop shop for information, costs, green assessments and partnerships with lenders.

It’s not just good for the planet – it’s good for your pocket

Every unit of energy you save, and every green upgrade you make, helps reduce your carbon footprint and your energy bills. That’s a win for your wallet and your world — and a boost for your current account balance.

*We have a commercial relationship with Propflo and while this blog article wasn’t written to focus on them, we wanted to you to be fully aware.
